StevieSpin Digital Media has teamed up with weatherman Al Roker for an all new app inspired by real life events for the television personality. Al's Weather Rokies features real time weather updates and gameplay that challenges players to wake up the weatherman before he's late to work. Fans can pick up Al's Weather Rokies for $0.99 in the App Store on iTunes starting today. Read on for more details.
Roker loves the weather so much, he often dreams about it. It is up to players to wake him and get him to the studio. Players flick quirky characters, called “Rokies,” at matching icons in Roker’s dream to clear a path to his alarm clock. The goal is to break through the weather “Rokies” in order to strike the alarm clock and wake up Roker. The game also incorporates the player’s local weather forecasts; the icons used in gameplay, during the Weather Blitzzz rounds, are based on that day’s weather conditions. The app features two gameplay worlds with 10 levels each, as well as unique bonus rounds. Weather icons act as both Al’s mascots and interactive in-game elements.
“Creating an app that fused animation and weather was an exciting opportunity I could not pass up. I loved being part of the creative process and sketching some of the mascots featured in the game,” said Roker. “I challenge everyone to WAKE ME UP!”
The game co-creators include Katie Linendoll, an Emmy Award-winning TV host and technology contributor to “The Today Show”, and Steve Lunny, an interactive media designer and animator.
Combining real-time weather with a new unique type of gameplay, along with Roker and his “Rokie” characters was an exciting challenge. Linendoll and Lunny have co-published two games for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, starting with 2012’s Splatrpult. Their creative synergy has allowed them to build a one-stop tech creative shop. Al’s Weather Rokies App is their proudest creation to date and represents months of collaboration, alongside Roker.
“I’ve absolutely loved working with Al since I started as a contributor at Today years ago,” said Linendoll. “We’re both super techie, love cartoons and everything cutting edge, so developing a new app was a no-brainer and an exciting opportunity to further collaborate.”
