Duck Game (Video Game Review)

Duck Game is a new title from indie developer Landon Podbielski. The developer worked on other popular titles that includes Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe, but Duck Game marks the developer's first solo game. The very simple name of the new title matches gameplay that is also very basic and throws four duck combatants into an arena to fight each other with whatever weapons are randomly scattered around the map. It's disappointing that Duck Game only includes local multiplayer, but the release is a whole lot of fun with friends and family and makes a great party game.

Gameplay in Duck Game is very basic. The Ouya exclusive combines elements of games such as Super Crate Box with Super Smash Bros. where four ducks battle it out to be the last duck standing. There are a variety of game modes and options for the game's multiplayer that all boil down to who can win the most rounds, and rounds are typically very quick with one hit, one kill rules meaning players won't survive for very long no matter what. The quick, frantic action sees players make mad dashes for weapon drops and quickly turn to take out other players, and it's a fun and addictive formula that should see Duck Game having a lot of success on the Ouya.

There are nearly 40 weapons included in Duck Game. There are plenty of variety with the weapons from melee weapons such as swords to firearms like net guns and miniguns. Weapons are found in presents that are scattered around the map during matches, and the weapons are always randomized to add even more excitement to the game. Since there are a variety of items available in crates including novelty items such as a saxophone or a mind control weapon, players will quickly learn if they stand a chance against other players in a match soon after it begins.

There are over 50 different levels included in Duck Game, so players will have a good many options when starting up a new match. These range from swamps to mountains and definitely take the ducks out of the pond. The retro graphics present in Duck Game look inspired by classic NES and SNES games, but the title runs at 60 frames per second to make characters and environments look nice no matter what. Additionally, Duck Game features a completely original soundtrack Podbielski that also has a retro sound that classic gamers are sure to love, while the developer proves he has many talents beyond game design.

No online support definitely hurts the overall replayability of Duck Game. It's a lot more difficult to get together three friends at your house to play the game than it would be to join in online matches with random players, but Duck Game is still a fun game when there are enough players to start a match. Funny duck sprites and silly items that randomly appear in the game keep the title from ever taking itself too seriously, and the fast-paced gameplay ensures players can easily get into a match and try to get bragging rights among friends and family about who is truly the best duck around. Buffet Bliss or Southern Swing-and-a-Miss? A Bite at Kacey’s in Huntsville

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...

Step Back in Time at Ole Towne Café in Ardmore

If you’ve ever wished you could step into your grandma’s kitchen and smell fresh biscuits baking while bacon sizzles in the skillet, Ole Towne Café in Ardmore, Alabama, is the next best thing. Tucked along Main Street, this little diner doesn’t just serve food—it serves nostalgia. Walking in, you’re greeted with that small-town charm you just can’t fake. Even if you’re new in town, you’ll feel like family after your first cup of coffee. The menu is straight out of a Southern comfort cookbook. The catfish plates are fried to crispy perfection, the hamburger steaks come smothered in gravy that tastes like Sunday supper, and the breakfast plates are legendary—big fluffy pancakes, biscuits as big as your hand, and hash browns that come golden and crispy.
