Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is a new Nintendo 3DS exclusive based on the animated musical of the same name that stars the likes of Dan Aykroyd, James Belushi, Kelsey Grammer and Lea Michele as Dorothy. Despite sharing the same name as the film, fans won't find much in common with the game and movie. The cast of characters from the film are present in the game but don't retain the same voices, and gameplay is puzzle based and has very little to do with the movie's narrative. With all of that said, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is still a fun game that fans of the puzzle genre will enjoy, while the game still has enough unlockable content from the film to give fans a reason to try out the new title.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return does feature a similar narrative to the film with players joining Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion on a trip across Oz to find and deal with the dastardly Jester. The campaign is spread across five locations inspired by the film, but the puzzle gameplay means players don't actually get a chance to freely explore the unique areas. There are 30 levels in total, so it will take players a while to play through the whole game.
Puzzle gameplay is at the heart of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. Players will match tiles on a board to clear them and get points based on how many are removed in a single turn. It's a simple but addictive gameplay mechanic that gives the game plenty of value for fans of the genre. Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return changes the formula a bit with the ability to upgrade tiles and gain new abilities that help clear even more squares from the board and earn even more points with each move. This is especially helpful further in the game, when levels become more difficult to clear.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return introduces several boss battles later in the game that offer a completely different challenge for players to overcome. These include antagonists from the film including the flying monkeys all the way up to the final boss encounter with the Jester. The battles have some unique mechanics that will challenge players to change their typical gameplay style to overcome the encounter, but there are enough special tiles and consumable items available to keep the game from ever becoming too difficult or unfair to deal with.
One nice feature of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return allows players to unlock artwork from the film. This is great for fans of the film, and it gives players something to work towards while playing through the game. The game also includes special high scores and leaderboards that will make players want to go back and revisit some of the same levels in order to accomplish everything that is available in the game.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return features some decent graphics, and the likenesses of the characters of the film look nearly identical to those in the film. The characters in the game only do a bit more than talk to players before offering some tips during the various levels of the game, and losing the voices from the film doesn't make the game any more attractive for fans. The game is easy to control on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS with the touchscreen, and players can choose whether to play the game in 3D or 2D on the 3DS.
Overall, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is a fun puzzle game that might not be what fans were expecting from the game but is a good distraction for fans of the genre. The game doesn't exactly have the content that fans of the film would be looking for, but unlockable art does offer some content from the film while also giving some nice replay value to game.
