Epic Games’ has announced new details from the Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
Today
Apple announced Metal, a new low-level rendering API designed to
dramatically improve the CPU efficiency of rendering on iOS devices. Epic’s
founder Tim Sweeney and lead platform engineer Josh Adams were onstage
to provide the only live, real-time demo showing the new API in action. “Zen
Garden” is a beautiful environment built in Unreal Engine 4 to
demonstrate the kinds of vibrant dynamic scenes and enormous vistas made
possible by Metal's order-of-magnitude increases in efficiency.
To see the demonstration, watch Apple's WWDC keynote and jump to (99:32) for the unveiling. Epic
will make Zen Garden available in the App Store after iOS 8's public
release, and the Metal code in Unreal Engine 4 will be available to
developers at an appropriate time after the beta access NDAs are lifted. Epic’s blog post can be found here, and the development team will also discuss this news in further detail on Thursday’s Twitch livestream at 2pm ET.
