Collecting Monster Toys (Book Review)

Collecting Monster Toys is a classic collector's guide from Schiffer Publishing and author John Marshall that chronicles some of the greatest monster toys of all time with over 150 pages of content. Fans of all types of horror movie monsters will be impressed with the publication that includes looks at vintage toys from classic Hollywood movie monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man and colossal beasts such as Godzilla and King Kong. Collecting Monster Toys is a good read, but it shouldn't be confused with a toy price guide. The book's content is laid across several chapters that simply shows images with information on many different toys from older releases and doesn't typically include information telling how much the products may be worth. This does allow the content to remain fresh and worth a read despite the book being many years old today.

Most of us collected toys and action figures as children, but for horror fans, monster toys were the most cherished. For fans of older horror films, there's nothing better than adding to a growing collection of giant monster or classic Hollywood movie monster toy collections. Collecting Monster Toys offers fans both a chance to learn more about the toys they already own with images, some original packaging and information on the toy and a way to learn about toys they may not have known existed before reading through the new book.

Collecting Monster Toys also includes a chapter near the end of the book that features more modern horror movie monster toys. Fans of the Nightmare on Elm Street, Aliens and related horror films from the time period will find plenty of neat toys in this section. Like the previous sections before it, the Modern Monsters chapter includes some pretty rare and bizarre toys including Freddy Krueger spitballs, yuck! While scouring through the entire book, readers are sure to learn about plenty of other bizarre products as only the combination of the toys and horror industries could have ever created.

Collecting Monster Toys is an interesting read and well worth picking up for toy collectors and horror movie fans. The book includes all sorts of monsters and items from some of the biggest horror film franchises of all-time, so there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy. The book won't replace a price guide and isn't as thorough as some other publications, but the layout makes it a fun read. Older readers will enjoy the trip down memory lane and seeing the toys that helped make up their childhood years, while others will use the book to find ideas of toys to buy and make new memories.
