Dragon Ball Xenoverse is an upcoming game from Bandai Namco that marks the first release of a Dragon Ball game on next generation consoles. The game's presentation at E3 2014 included an exclusive look at the game's first demo and new trailer. The first thing that would be apparent to fans of the series is that Dragon Ball Xenoverse is easily the best looking video game the franchise has ever seen. Characters models have been improved using cel-shaded graphics that have become the staple of the franchise, while character animations are top notch and look incredibly impressive in full HD displays. Not a whole lot of details were given on the upcoming game, but the game looked good enough in its early development cycle that fans of the fighting games shouldn't worry about the game being a quality product when it is finally finished.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse will feature a new storyline for the series, but it will retain some of the classic battles Dragon Ball Z fans have witnessed time and time again over the years. The trailer for the game showed off Goku fighting against Vegeta, Freiza, Cell and Buu among some other classic battles. The storyline for Dragon Ball Xenoverse has been altered though with the arrival of a mysterious new character that is shown from behind in the new trailer but doesn't yet have a name or face before the game's release. The plot of Dragon Ball Xenoverse should be close enough to the original to not upset fans while also offering enough new content to make it not drudge through the same story put in video game form.
The second part of the Bandai Namco presentation for Dragon Ball Xenoverse at E3 2014 featured a gamplay demo of an early version of the game from a member of the team behind the title. The demo featured a few different fights with the presenter controlling Goku on the Dual Shock 4. The game looked impressive and featured some nicely designed levels with different environments including areas where battles could head underwater. Many of the levels included some interactive and destructible items as well, since stray energy blasts could send a small mountain crumbling down to the ground. Level design seemed to be a really strong feature in Dragon Ball Xenoverse, and it will be interesting to see how things turn out in the final release.
There are still a lot of unanswered questions with Dragon Ball Xenoverse. The game has yet to reveal a full roster of characters, and we don't yet know what game modes will be included in the game's final version. The game's storyline could also be made or broken by the introduction of the trailer's mystery character. Dimps is in charge of development of the game, and they've been involved in plenty of successful fighter games including previous Dragon Ball video game releases and the Street Fighter series, so character balance and other gameplay features should remain a strong part of Dragon Ball Xenoverse when the game is released in the near future. Look for Dragon Ball Xenoverse coming soon to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse is now available for preorder from most major retailers for the MSRP of $59.99 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. Dragon Ball Xenoverse is not yet rated. For more information on the game, check out the official Dragon Ball Xenoverse website.
