Midnight Releasing is set to unleash Blood Widow on June 3rd starring Kelly Kilgore. Kelly's versatile career includes such titles as Spaceship Florida, Fun World and now Blood Widow. BGG After Dark recently had a chance to talk with Kelly about her new film and ever expanding resume.
AMANDA DYAR: How did you get involved in the film, Kelly?
KELLY KILGORE: This is a great story, actually. I woke up the morning of the audition and wasn't really feeling like getting out of the house. But I gave myself a pep talk and went anyway. I think I read for Laurie and Harmony that afternoon, and I received a callback for Harmony scheduled for the day after. So the next day, when the callback was over, I gathered my purse and sides and left. But before I even made it out of the building, the Arcani guys sent someone to chase me down and bring me back, where they informed me I had gotten the role! I was so surprised, but it was awesome! Altogether I think the whole process took two days. And I almost didn't go! Crazy.
AMANDA: Can you sum up your character for us – without giving away?
KELLY: Harmony is the innocent of the group, always looking for the good in everyone and willing to try anything. She’s Laurie’s oldest friend; and she's the one Laurie chooses to confide in when something's not right. She's got a huge crush on Kenneth, one of Hugh's friends, and she carries around a large statue of Buddha instead of a teddy bear. I personally find Harmony hilarious and had a blast playing her.
AMANDA: The Blood Widow is a legitimately scary character… are you at all scared when you’re doing those scenes?
KELLY: It was quite creepy. I'd been there all day by myself with just the crew, and then Gabbie showed up that night to film our scene together. Gabbie is the sweetest girl imaginable in real life, but with that costume on she's terrifying ... You know, all Harmony wanted was to be the Blood Widow’s friend … You’ll have to watch the movie to see how well that worked out.
AMANDA: Were you a horror fan before?
KELLY: To tell you the truth, I’m terrified of horror movies! My imagination is too vivid -- I always imagine the bad guy lurking in the shadows of my house. That may be why I chose to play Harmony as such a pure soul--to bring some light into a very dark film.
AMANDA: You have done theatre, too. Which do you prefer – film or theatre?
KELLY: Film and theatre are such different mediums; it's so hard to choose one over the other. In the theatre an actor gets this amazing, immediate response from audience members in the same room at the same moment. Film, on the other hand, expands that audience to encompass thousands of people across the globe! I love both art forms for different reasons, and I count myself extremely lucky that I get to do both in my career.
AMANDA: You have such an interesting, full life; how do you handle it all?
KELLY: Lots of lists and calendars! Organization is key. I do try and fill my life with as many crazy things as possible because I'm interested in so many things--everything from Japanese to pole fitness. But whenever it gets to be too much, I remind myself of a phrase I learned from one of my mentors: “Grateful for the work.” As long as I have interesting, fun, challenging work available, I will find a way to make it happen.
