Koko Takes a Holiday (Book Review)

Koko Takes a Holiday is a new steampunk novel from author Kieran Shea and published by Titan Books. The title provides readers with an action packed ride full of bizarre characters and even stranger scenarios. The book opens with a look at different security cameras around The Sixty Islands and some of its citizens that includes a woman groping a naked man that she has chained and collared. Koko Takes a Holiday isn't a book that every reader will enjoy, but fans of far out there science fiction works similar to what movie fans would expect from a Quentin Tarantino flick will feel right at home in the new release.

The star of Koko Takes a Holiday is a former mercenary named Koko Martstellar. Despite her adventurous nature and expert fighting skills, Koko has left her former life behind and now runs her own brothel out on The Sixty Islands. Of course, it wouldn't be a very interesting book if Koko got to live away her retirement in peace, so its not long before a group of assassins show up and attempt to take her out. The assassination attempt was ordered by Koko's former friend, Portia Delacompte, only she can't remember requesting the hit. The tale only gets stranger from there as Koko heads out to find out what is really going on and why someone wanted to ruin her day.

The pacing of Koko Takes a Holiday is just about as strange as the story it is telling. The action shifts several times to the happenings on the islands through the eyes of security as described above. The story also tends to have shorter chapters at times that sets a quick scene and is often silly compared to the rest of the story before moving right back to what is happening with Koko and her companions. It's a weird pacing that can throw readers off when first beginning the novel, but it soon becomes one of the more charming aspects of Koko Takes a Holiday .

Koko Takes a Holiday is a strange tale, but readers should enjoy the novel assuming they are fans of bizarre steampunk fiction. The storyline is pretty well done, and there are enough interesting characters and situations to keep readers interested through the entire book. If reading a book about a ex-mercenary and brothel owner living in a post-apocalyptic world sounds like a good read to you, then you can be sure you'll enjoy reading Koko Takes a Holiday. Look for the book new today from Titan Books.

Koko Takes a Holiday is now available from most major retailers and Titan Books and can be purchased for $14.95. For more information on Koko Takes a Holiday, check it out on the official Koko Takes a Holiday website.
