Resistance (Book Review)

Resistance is a new novel from Titan Books and author Samit Basu. Resistance marks the sixth major published book from Basu, and the new release is the sequel to 2013's Turbulence. The story picks up in 2020, eleven years after the beginning of Turbulence and the event that changed the world by turning normal citizens into superheroes. Fans of the series will be happy to see the return of several important characters from the first novel, but there is enough new content and characters featured in Resistance that it isn't completely required that readers must have read Turbulence before picking up the new release.

In Resistance, the world is well aware of those that have superpowers in the world, and it's well known that not all those with powers can be considered heroes. When both the good and bad guys start turning up dead though, old enemies will need to team up to find out what is going on and to prevent themselves from becoming the next victim to the scheme. The storyline of Resistance is a good one that is comparable with the television show Heroes, only the book does not get crappy halfway through its tale.

Basu does an excellent job of creating characters that readers can relate with and fully understand on an emotional level. Several of the novel's characters are originally from Basu's home country of India, but the story and dialogue between characters is so well written that it easily overcomes any cultural barriers to allow international readers to fully enjoy the series. The characters in the book don't just have nice powers and backgrounds though, because Basu manages to keep his characters interesting and continue developing relationships between the good and evil characters throughout the 400 pages of the novel.

Resistance has it all from interesting characters to exciting text describing a battle between a group of heroes and a massive monster. Basu seems to really be in his element in the superhero genre, and we can't wait to see where the series goes from here. Fans would be doing themselves a favor by picking up copies of both Turbulence and Resistance to receive the full story from the beginning, but both make excellent standalone titles as well. Look for the release of Resistance starting July 8!

Resistance is now available from most major retailers and Titan Books and can be purchased for $14.95. For more information on Resistance, check it out on the official Titan Books website.
