GRID Autosport is the newest racing title from developer and publisher Codemasters. The game adds new features and innovations to the series and offers a entertaining racing experience that can rival the Gran Turismo and Forza series. The game isn't without some questionable design choices that isn't limited to very aggressive and difficult to race against AI opponents as well as some presentation issues, but GRID Autosport does include a lengthy Career mode and some fun online multiplayer for up to 12 players. Fans of the series won't be disappointed with the third release for Codemasters.
Starting up GRID Autosport for the first time will immediately throw players into a race with a quick introduction of the no nonsense racing and fancy introductions that will accompany players for the remainder of their time with the game. Players shouldn't expect to finish very high in the introductory race with only a few assists turned on for the race and the learning curve that is associated with the game's aggressive AI. After the race, players can progress to a new Career or head online to race with other players.
Career mode in GRID Autosport has players choose a discipline, championship event and a sponsor. The disciplines available in the game include Tuner, Street and Drift and allow players to choose which type of racing events they'd like to compete in. Then it's time to choose an event. Events will be split across multiple races with players earning more experience points and greater rewards for participating in longer events. Players must also choose a sponsor before beginning some events in order to unlock special sponsor challenges that can be completed to earn additional experience points and rewards beyond what is received from solely competing in events.
GRID Autosport follows the recent tradition of including assists to help newer players get used to racing in the game while receiving lesser rewards for completing races. The assists include things such as automatic braking, steering assist and more. These can be adjusted through the options menu by changing the game's difficulty setting or changing specific assist settings.
GRID Autosport also includes online racing for up to 12 players in a single session. The game seems relatively lag free following its release and features dedicated servers that should keep the racing action fun and competitive for all. There are a few different game mode, race options and other variants to keep players interested in the online portion of the game. There are also some rules to keep one bad apple from ruining the race for everyone in a session.
GRID Autosport has a good presentation that includes a Career mode with introductions for each event that will get players hyped for the upcoming races. The introductions are in the more elaborate style with narrators explaining races and cars that will get players hyped before a race ever begins. The game also has some impressive graphics that look most impressive on the cars in the game. There are over 70 cars and over 20 tracks to give players plenty of options when starting up a race. There are also a variety of different music genres on the game's soundtrack from electronic themes to dramatic overtures.
GRID Autosport is a tough game that utilizes aggressive AI that forces players to carefully pick their way through a crowded track while narrowly avoiding other drivers. AI racers also aren't afraid to crash into players and take them out of the race when they get in the way. Racing fans will need to be experienced in the game in order to compete at a high level even with assists turned on, but this also gives players plenty of content in Career and Online modes to get a lot of hours of gameplay out of this new game before moving on to something new. Look for GRID Autosport in stores today!
GRID Autosport is now available from all major retailers for the MSRP of $59.99 and can be purchased for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. GRID Autosport is rated E by the ESRB. For more information on the game, check out the official GRID Autosport website.
