Organic Panic (Video Game Preview)

Organic Panic is a new indie title from developer Last Limb that finds players in the middle of an all out war between the meats and cheeses food group and the fruits and vegetables food group. Players will control a few different types of fruits and veggies in the game including a Cherry, Kiwi, Carrot and Coconut. The game is based heavily in the platformer genre and will have players attempting to make their way through stages to reach a goal at the end of each level. The game is pretty entertaining, but it's also only playable currently in Steam Early Access. The game definitely doesn't have the polish of a finished game and has some game modes to still unveil before the final product is released in September. Assuming the game gets better as it nears closer to launch, Organic Panic could be a game well worth looking into for fans of the platformer genre.

The stars of Organic Panic are the fruits and vegetables. Each character has a unique set of abilities that are used with powerups found in levels to help progress to the final goal. For example, the Cherry character can fire off projectiles to kill enemies from a distance or chop down trees, the Kiwi is good as swimming and using water to solve puzzles, and the Carrot can summon fire to help clear paths. Later levels in the game combine the use of all character powers and can be tough to complete. The game doesn't do a good job of tutorializing each character and their respective abilities for a match, and a lot of unnecessary trial and error will occur in earlier levels, as players learn to solve puzzles based around each character's skills.

Organic Panic is a pretty decent looking game with environments that feel heavily influenced by the Worms series from Team17, while the gameplay is more akin to something like Battleblock Theater. Character models are cartoonish but look pretty nice as well. The game does seem to suffer from some dropped frames and other minor issues, but hopefully these problems will be ironed out by the time the full game is released. The final version of the game will boast over 100 levels, and players access each is a style that is similar to Angry Birds with collections of levels making u each world and players being awarded one of three ratings at the end of each level based on kills, deaths, secrets founds and other statistical measurements.

Organic Panic is currently available to play in single player and cooperative multiplayer. The game will get a versus multiplayer mode later, and a special solo mode is also coming that mixes up the gameplay from the original campaign. A level editor is included in the game that allows players to create their own maps or find some of the most popular user created content to play for themselves as well. It's easy to see Organic Panic already packs a good amount of content for players that enjoy the game, and even more will be arriving before the game's final release. Fans looking for a new platformer should check out Organic Panic on Steam Early Access today!

Organic Panic is scheduled to release for PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade and Steam on September 8, 2014. Organic Panic is not yet rated. For more information on the game, check out the official Organic Panic website.
