World of Tanks Blitz (Video Game Review)

World of Tanks Blitz is the newest release from the highly popular World of Tanks series from Wargaming.net. The game company has been around for multiple years but has never seen as much success as with the recent release of World of Tanks. The free-to-play PC and Xbox game managed to grow in popularity with each release in a new territory and is now known the world over as one of the most addictive and best free-to-play games ever. World of Tanks Blitz then has a lot to live up to no doubt, but luckily for Wargaming.net and fans of the series, the mobile version of World of Tanks is just as entertaining and addictive as its predecessor.

World of Tanks Blitz is built on a similar free-to-play model as the original game from the series. The game rewards players with experience points and currency at the end of each match, whether players win or lose, and players earn new unlocks as they level up and progress through the game, while currency can be used to purchase additional upgrades for tanks or new war machines altogether. The free-to-play model does offer players some exclusive content including some powerful tanks to use in games online, but players willing to grind out levels and the different tiers and classes of tanks will find that the tanks available without paying any money into the game are just as powerful if not more so than the rides players choose to pay for.

It's no surprise then that World of Tanks Blitz has the tools to be just as successful as the original World of Tanks with a free-to-play model that definitely can't be classified in the pay-to-win category. The game offers players a chance to purchase upgrades, new tanks or in-game currency to use on different unlocks in the game, and there are over 90 different tanks including in the game from three different countries. Players can hold up to six different tanks be default, but additional slots are available to unlock as well. The only real annoyance that will come from the game's free-to-play model is the constant reminders popping up at the end of matches that show how players can unlock more items and rewards by paying a bit of money towards the game, but Wargaming.net has to pay the bills somehow.

World of Tanks Blitz, like its predecessor, is a game that relies heavily on the skill of players to determine the outcome of matches rather than the sheer capabilities of a tank. A player can have the quickest or most firepower available to a particular tank model, but if the player doesn't understand to attack the weak spot of an opponent's tank while protecting the vulnerable spots on their own tank, it won't take long for a skilled player to take down the pumped up vehicle. There are over 90 different tanks included in World of Tanks Blitz, so players will need to familiarize themselves with some of the most popular models including not only weak spots on tanks but also how each tank moves and what weapons are available on different models. Players will need to not only grind out some money and experience points to get better at the game, but it's also important to learn the ins and outs of this strategic mobile game.

World of Tanks Blitz only supports one game mode in its current form. Battles have been scaled back a bit to only support up to 7 vs. 7 matches online. The object in any match is to secure a neutral base located in the middle of the arena, though there is always a secondary objective to clear out all enemy tanks to get the victory as well. The game mode works well and ensures that players can't just sit back without attempting to search out opponents or securing the objective if they want to win the match. There are 8 maps included in World of Tanks Blitz, and there are a nice mixture of layouts for each level so that each game feels a bit different from the next.

World of Tanks Blitz controls well on iPad devices and allows players to move around, zoom in and attack enemy tanks with ease. The on-screen controls don't inhibit the action, and newcomers to the series will find it more difficult to learn to drive the slow and sometimes awkward moving vehicles more so than learning the game's easy to use control scheme. Players will need to find a tank that fits their playstyle since some have weak areas in the front or back, while others also only have the ability to drive in the direction the tank is facing and can create a large learning curve for players not yet used to the game.

World of Tanks Blitz only looks a bit less impressive than its PC counterpart. Tank models in the mobile game closely resemble those of the original title and only have a few less details. The environments in the game clearly aren't as well represented this time around, but level design is top-notch. The maps offer a nice mixture of covered areas for protection and good vantage points to hunker down and rain heavy fire on enemies. The map design is one of the strongest features of the new game and one of the few ways the new release surpasses the original.

World of Tanks Blitz has a plethora of other great features that make the game one of the truly must download, free-to-play games. The game offers plenty of helpful introductory tutorials that will help players learn the game's basics even if they never played the game before or to introduce a few new ideas and new controls for players experiencing the game for the first time on iPad. World of Tanks Blitz doesn't skip out on the online features either and allows players to invite their friends to join up in the same game and chat in real time. There are also plenty of achievements to unlock World of Tanks Blitz to give players more reasons to play beyond upgrading and unlocking new tanks.

World of Tanks Blitz is no doubt one of the best free-to-play games of all-time. The new game continues one of the world's most popular franchise with a mobile release that is just as addictive and enjoyable as the original PC game. World of Tanks Blitz packs plenty of content with over 90 tanks and 8 massive levels to battle it out on. The game manages to be nearly endlessly replayable thanks to a very addictive game mode, plenty of unlockables and a good sense of progression that will have players grinding out new upgrades and tanks at a steady rate. World of Tanks Blitz may be free-to-play but it implements the model nicely in a game that is even more skill based than a title that focuses on the statistical capabilities of the tanks.
