The Art of John Alvin (Book Review)

The Art of John Alvin is a new release from Titan Books that takes a look back at the famous art and movie posters crafted by one of the greatest media artists that ever lived, John Alvin. The book is great to look at for the fantastic art it features in full color on the glossy pages of the book, but it's the special tidbits of information scattered around the book that makes the read so special. Most readers are already fans of John Alvin, but they just might not know it yet. The artist colored some of the most famous artworks and movie posters from the last several decades including the Star Wars series, E.T. and more.

The book begins with a nice foreword from Jeffrey Katzenberg. The filmmaker worked with Alvin in the past and has some nice things to say not only about the work Alvin did as an artist, but Katzenberg also tells about Alvin as a person. The content is well written and is an excellent beginning for the book. What follows is over 100 pages of various artwork, movie posters and other creations from Alvin. Looking through the pages is a lot of fun, and The Art of John Alvin makes an excellent choice as a coffee table centerpiece.

The interesting aspects of The Art of John Alvin are the excerpts, facts and other pieces of information littered throughout the book. These begin with Alvin's first breakthrough work for the Mel Brook's film Blazing Saddles with some information on how Alvin got the gig and continue through the years with information such as how the original artwork differed from the finished products we all know. Fans of the artist will love the read, and the casual reader will find the facts nearly as interesting. It's even more enjoyable to flip through the pages and discover a famous movie poster that the artist designed that the reader may not have been aware of. No matter how you enjoy The Art of John Alvin, you're sure to learn something and have a good time regardless.

The Art of John Alvin is a fun book to read for longtime fans of the artists or movie fans in general that simply want to learn more about the industry and one of the best artists to ever work on the artwork and movie posters of classic films. The book is littered with plenty of amazing artwork, and reading the facts behind the pieces is sometimes even more interesting than the drawing itself. The Art of John Alvin makes a great choice for placing in the living room, and fans will want to show off the book to friends thanks to fantastic publication quality.
