Ultra Street Fighter IV (Video Game Review)

Ultra Street Fighter IV is the new downloadable expansion made available for owners of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition or purchasable as a standalone title. Street Fighter IV is nearly five years old, but the game still continues to be one of the most balanced and competitive games in the fighting tournament scene. Ultra Street Fighter IV completely changes the game, and the title is noteworthy not only for the addition of five new and playable characters to the game's already impressive roster, but the release comes with plenty of enhanced online features and roster balance tweaks to make Ultra Street Fighter IV the definitive edition of one of the best fighting games to release over the last several years.

Much of the content from the original game returns in Ultra Street Fighter IV including a massive roster of over 30 different characters. Ultra Street Fighter IV also includes five new characters; Rolento, Poison, Elena and Hugo make the transition from Street Fighter X Tekken, and Decapre appears as a new fighter that closely resembles Cammy in a blue spandex superhero outfit. Six new stages have been added to the game as well to give All single player modes return to the game as well, but players will also find some new features including match recording for offline matches. This gives the game some good content for players that aren't into the competitive and online scenes of the fighting game genre.

Each of the game's new characters bring something new to the game. For example, Hugo is devastating in close proximity to other fighters with grapples and clapping attacks that can deal a lot of damage quickly, while Elena is also strong in close distances with quick pokes that can combo and chain together nicely. The game's roster has also made plenty of tweaks to fix balance issues. This allows characters that were formerly overmatched in online and tournament matches to be viable options once again. Players will need to practice, experiment and practice again to learn which characters will be their favorite in the new game, and it will take plenty of time to discover which characters are considered the best in the Ultra Street Fighter IV community, but the changes seem to be for the better of the franchise so far.

Some of the more advanced changes for the game will be more popular among the hardcore Ultra Street Fighter IV fans. Characters now have access to both Ultras during matches, which adds more strategy to matches depending on the usefulness of each fighter's special attacks. The power output of the Ultras have been reduced to compliment the change. Delayed standing and an ability to break out of combos that used to leave players helpless in certain situations have been tweaked to make the game more competitive. Longtime fans of the series will also be excited to use the different edition of fighters from the Street Fighter series that allows players to use their favorite version of a certain character. The feature essentially increases the game's roster size to an even more expansive collection that is one of the most robust offerings Capcom has ever given fans of the game.

Online play in Ultra Street Fighter IV has been enhanced in the new release. Fighting fans have been clamoring for new features to be added to the game since its original release, and several of those features have made it into the new title. Players will now find an option to practice fighting against AI opponents while waiting for matches to start. A new game mode is available online with team battles placing three players against three others. Team Battle Mode is a nice way to enjoy the game and simply adds even more reason to play the game online with friends.

Ultra Street Fighter IV is a pretty nice looking game overall. The game's graphics and visuals haven't changed for the new release, but the game already looked pretty good, so tweaked graphics weren't really a concern for the new game. The game does include over 100 DLC costumes for players that purchase the full version of the game on disc or download for fans that want all the game has to offer. Ultra Street Fighter IV isn't without a few problems though. Online modes are still rough to play for casual players that are just attempting to learn the game with matchmaking that doesn't always set up fair fights.

Ultra Street Fighter IV is the best version of the most popular fighting game franchise in the world. Fighting fans won't be disappointed with the new release. All of the new features to the game are welcome additions, and the game is available in both add-on format for a low price or for a full disc or download for only $39.99. Ultra Street Fighter IV is well worth the money and is sure to be one of the most widely played games in fighting game tournaments in the near future. Ultra Street Fighter IV is one of the most entertaining fighting games around and has enough character balance and a massive roster that will make the game one of the most popular fighting games ever.
