Coinciding with today’s launch of iOS 8, Epic Games has released Epic Zen Garden, a beautiful graphical environment built with Unreal Engine 4, as a free download in the App Store.


The app, which was showcased during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, was created to demonstrate the power of the engine using Apple’s new Metal API and gives a look at the future of mobile gaming. With an unmatched level of graphical fidelity and an accessible toolset, Unreal Engine 4 is designed for developers fueling the next generation of game development.

Epic Zen Garden features vibrant, interactive scenes filled with peaceful activities to help find true tranquility. Simply tap to navigate this serene oasis brimming with unmatched detail on mobile. Swipe the Sakura tree to make thousands of cherry blossoms swirl in the air, graze the koi pond to summon leagues of fish, rake the sand with your finger to create subtle designs, and touch the well to bring throngs of butterflies out of hiding. The environment and details are all rendered beautifully thanks to Metal’s exponential increases in efficiency.

September 19 marks six months since Epic Games launched UE4 and opened up the engine to the developers everywhere with its accessible subscription model and GitHub source code community. Since launch, Unreal Engine 4 has seen thousands of upgrades and enhancements, including added support for SteamOS, Linux and many middleware technologies, the preview release of the new Unreal Motion Graphics UI system, the launch of the Unreal Engine Marketplace and much more. The engine is now also provided for free to schools and universities educating the next generation of artists, programmers and designers making games, VR experiences, simulations and visualizations.
