Exclusive Interview: Blair Bowers Discusses Geographically Desirable
Since Thelma and Louise drove, er, flew off that cliff there’s been a deficiency in female-led features. Director Mike Kravinsky and actress Blair Bowers hope that changes with the arrival of their new film, Geographically Desirable. We spoke to Bowers about the chick-led romantic comedy, released soon. Read on.
BGG After Dark: Geographically Desirable is one of the few female-led movies around at the moment. Do you agree that there isn’t nearly enough?
BLAIR BOWERS: Of course! I think there needs to be more female directors, cinematographers, editors, lead actors – you name it. I want a Wonder Woman movie, darn it! It makes me so grateful to Mike for writing a complex female lead and for allowing me so much creative input with her.
BGG After Dark: Do you think Hollywood mistakes the potential in the female star? Until Melissa McCarthy came along, even female-led comedies were few and far between.
BLAIR BOWERS: There is certainly a missed opportunity. More and more we are proving that women can not only be funny, but can win at the box office. After a summer with record low ticket sales, I hope it’s something producers keep in mind.
BGG After Dark: Could Geographically Desirable work with a male in the lead, or do you believe it’s a purely female vehicle?
BLAIR BOWERS: Everyone can relate to the struggle of balancing work life and personal life, but I think this works best as a female vehicle. I know I related all too well to a lot of it.
BGG After Dark: How many years have you been in the business? Has it been a tough journey?
BLAIR BOWERS: I have been in D.C. theatre for a little under five years, which is an incredibly supportive community. I had done a little film work, but not much. I actually got this job about a month after deciding to move to L.A. to pursue film, which was kind of perfect timing. I think this journey is never easy, but as long as you stay grateful, it’s worth it.
BGG After Dark: How did you land on Mike Kravinsky’s radar for Geographically Desirable?
BLAIR BOWERS: I responded to an open casting call and was brought in to read for a completely different role. After not hearing anything for a bit, I got a phone call from Mike asking if I would mind coming in again to read for Nicole.
BGG After Dark: Is he an ‘actor’s director’? Does he encourage improvisation and input?
BLAIR BOWERS: He was wonderful. I have to say he was incredibly humble with his writing. If I wanted to tweak something because it didn’t feel right or I didn’t think it was really Nicole’s voice, we would immediately discuss and see what we could come up with. I know a few scenes changed while we were busy improving and Mike would just say go with it!
