The Wolves of Savin Hill is set to premiere at the San Diego Film Festival on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Actress Tonya Cornelisse solidifies her position as one of cinema’s ‘next big things’ with a stunning turn in the gritty Wolves of Savin Hill. As the film preps for its bow at the San Diego Film Festival, Cornelisse took time out to converse about the experience of working on such a mostly-male flick.
BGG AFTER DARK: You’re one of the few females in this movie – so you’ve another reason to really make an impression here. Did you feel that pressure?
TONYA CORNELISSE If there was any pressure - I absolutely embrace the idea to own the pressure! (laughter) My character was extremely strong on the page and I jumped in.
BGG AFTER DARK: What was the atmosphere on set like? Was it a ‘boys club’?
TONYA CORNELISSE The set was great - John and company created a very conducive atmosphere that allowed the work to elevate... All I ask! It did not feel like a club for boys, but if it was I am very comfortable to take charge of a pack in any boy’s club always!
BGG AFTER DARK: What appealed to you about The Wolves of Savin Hill? Was it a departure from some of the other things you’ve done?
TONYA CORNELISSE It’s a really special film and my role, Cassandra was dark and dangerous and extremely feminine and sensual at the same time. It’s always what I look for in any character I consider the layering of their humanity. She had a lot of layers to peel off.
BGG AFTER DARK: Do you have a favorite moment in the movie?
TONYA CORNELISSE I have a few, but one that I will share is the eerie rendition of “I’m A Little Tea Pot” -- John and I did that in the basement of an empty car park in Santa Monica. He recorded me singing in a dark corner ... good times!
BGG AFTER DARK: What are you up to next?
TONYA CORNELISSE I am deep in the middle of Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize winning play BURIED CHILD and it is pretty consuming. I have a film in the works that will hopefully be in the can by the end of the year as well!
