Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes (Video Game Review)

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is the newest release for the toys to life franchise introduced from Disney late last year. The new release adds some new features including most notably an ability to place some of the Marvel Universe's most popular heroes into the game and interact with Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Stitch. Fans of the series will love the new improvements made to the game's create mode, known as the Toy Box, though the game's main campaign is rather bland and repetitive. Overall, Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is a decent release for the series, but the high cost of owning the game may sway some to choose other popular games over this new title.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes' new storyline revolves around The Avengers, and the starter pack comes with figures for Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow. Players head to Manhattan to battle against Loki and his legion of Frost Giants he has unleashed on the city. The game's narrative isn't so bad this time around, and there is some good humor included in the storyline, but the gameplay is boring and has players battling waves of frost giants over and over again with little variation. The only real changes come from the introduction of frost giants with different weapons or shields, but none of the battles are really all that challenging, and players will mostly button mash their way through waves of enemies with no objective, save for the few instances where players need to protect a generator or perform a similar task while fighting.

One major improvement Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes makes is in the new character skill trees. These allow players to customize their characters with different skills that include more powerful melee attacks, faster firing ranged attacks and more. Most of the skill trees have the same type of skills to learn, but the attacks are different for each character. Players will also be happy to know the game increases the level cap for older Disney Infinity characters up to level 20, and skill trees have been added for the original characters as well to give fans a reason to dust off their old toys.

The other big changes Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes makes comes in the Toy Box creation mode. The mode allows players to create their own worlds, game variants and items to inhabit those levels much like what players would find in titles such as LittleBigPlanet. The changes include a better way to unlock items through choosing what to purchase with collected in-game currency and plenty of new tools to help create custom levels and games. The new changes can be a bit overwhelming for new players, since the game offers no true tutorials for the mode, but playing trial and error to discover what can be created in the game is pretty fun anyhow. Players can then upload their creations online or discover other Toy Boxes and some new ways to enjoy the game and figures.

The starter pack for Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes also includes two mini-games for players to enjoy with their new figures. Assault on Asgard is a tower defense game based on the world of Thor. Players will need to build towers and barricades to defeat waves of enemies and protect Asgard. Players will earn in-game currency and experience points for the character used in the mini-game for performing well during a session, and the mini-game is actually a lot of fun. Escape from Kyln is a game built in the style of classic arcade beat 'em ups. The game has players battling to escape the galactic prison all while building and upgrading a neat sidekick in a new mechanic introduced for the title.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes introduces three new sets of characters based on The Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises. There are over 20 new Marvel characters introduced for the new game, and players will also find some new figures in the Toy Box starter set for the game as well. Each starter pack comes with the Disney Infinity 2.0 game, figures, mini-games and more for $74.99. The price seems a bit high but is actually a bit of a value, since each comes with games and figures needed to play the new title.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes features a solid presentation that does the highly popular Marvel characters justice. The game looks nice and crafts some interesting character designs on well known entities. The in-game worlds look decent as well, but exploring Manhattan in the game's main campaign was a bit underwhelming with a lack of famous landmarks from the Marvel universe available to explore. The game has some pretty solid voice acting and has themes worthy of a Marvel super hero soundtrack. The games are easy to control, and switching characters in the game with the game's portal is pretty simple once players get the hang of it.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is a good game and a worthy successor for the Disney Infinity franchise. The game isn't without some problems that include a less that satisfying campaign, but some fun mini-games and exciting new Toy Box options help make up for a lackluster storyline in a big way. The new game will set gamers back a pretty penny, but the starter packs are a pretty good deal when considering the amount of content packed into each box. Choose your favorite super hero, or villain, and head into the world of Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes today!

Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, PC and iOS.
