The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 (Book Review)

The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 takes a look at many of the best video games to release during the birth and revival of the video game industry. The book comes from Schiffer Publishing and author Brett Weiss. The author has been publishing books based on his love of comics, video games and all other things associated with retro pop culture. The new book contains over 200 pages and 400 colored images showcasing some of the best games ever released during the 1970s and 1980s, and the pages are a good read for older gamers or those simply wanting to learn more about the history of the video games industry.

Most of the games included in the pages of The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 were released for the Atari 2600 and earlier video game consoles. The years only cover about two years of the Nintendo Entertainment System's roughly ten year life cycle, but there are still a few early gems from the console in the pages of the book at least. We would've loved to have seen what other games could have made the list from the entire NES catalog, but the book is still a good read nonetheless. Rather than pushing out a controversial list that ranks the 100 games, The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 simply lists the games in alphabetical order, so that readers can make up their own minds on which games are the best.

The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 packs a lot of historical content about each game on its list that makes each page very interesting. Information in the book ranges from what the current listing price for the game is to citations from classic game reviews in early video game journalism. Weiss also includes a fun fact about each game as well as a brief explanation stating why each game made the list at the end of each section. Each game takes up two to three pages and includes images showcasing screenshots captured from the game, original box art and more. The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 is an interesting read, and each chapter is another classic game that any gamer should be excited to learn more about.

The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 includes a comprehensive list of some of the best video games that released during the early years of the video games industry. The book contains a significant amount of information that historically documents some of the most important details surrounding the release and popularity of these classic games. Readers will easily be able to tell an abundance of research went into the creation of the book, and the content is up to the same high quality Schiffer Publishing has been known for over recent years. The only disappointment with the book is that it cuts off in the year 1987 and doesn't include later big name releases such as Ducktales, Super Mario Bros. 3 or Ninja Gaiden. Look for The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 from Schiffer Publishing today!

The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 is now available from Schiffer Publishing and can be purchased for $34.99. For more information on The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987, check out the official Schiffer Publishing website.
