BioWare is a developer well known for its epic RPG series such as Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Dragon Age: Inquisition marks the third major entry into the Dragon Age franchise that first appeared back in 2009 with Dragon Age: Origins. The new release is a culmination of great features and improvements made to the series in each of the series' first two releases. Dragon Age: Inquisition is easily the most enjoyable game to play in the series, even though the game's narrative is sometimes forgettable.
Dragon Age: Inquisition takes players back to the world of Thedas with a new storyline where players are tasked with leading an inquisition of warriors brought together to battle against demons and evil forces in order to find and seal the rifts the dark foes entered the world through. Underlying this main objective and plot is plenty of political drama based around the civil war and revolution the country is currently undergoing. While there are a few memorable characters introduced during the game's lengthy campaign, most are forgettable including the game's main antagonist, who is severely disappointing when compared with other popular RPG villains.
One of the primary features players will explore in Dragon Age: Inquisition is growing the power of the player's inquisition. The game contains a plethora of side quests, missions and optional bosses to tackle, and completing each of these additional tasks will add more renown and power to the player's group. Players will establish a base of operations early in the game and customize the keep to gain added benefits in and out of combat, and as more power is gained for the establishment, more party members can be recruited and used in combat in the player's party.
The amazing amount of side content pushes the amount of time players will spend with the expansive RPG to over 100 hours. The world is open to explore from early in the game, and the new area is far larger than previous settings for the series. With so much to experience in the game, it's nice that Dragon Age: Inquisition includes a very helpful map with easy to use waypoints that helps players find desired missions and easily access and travel to the new locations. The large amount of content will have players exploring and completing missions for hours without a need for the in-game map though, and the environments included in Dragon Age: Inquisition are varied enough to keep each new map feeling completely different from another.
Fans of the series will feel right at home with the action based battles featured in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Players control their custom character in combat but can switch between characters to cast certain spells or activate abilities during fights. The new tactical view returns in Dragon Age: Inquisition to add more strategy to combat as well. Players can choose to pause the action at any point during a fight and pan across the battlefield to issue certain commands or check on the status of different party members or enemies. All encounters happen live in the field, and enemies can come out of nowhere to really blindside players or vice versa.
Players will have some unique interactions with other characters and other players for the first time in the series. Players can customize their experience from the moment they create their main character from a nice selection of races, sexes and traits. As more friendly characters are introduced in the game, players can make new interactions with the protagonists in order to become better friends and even lovers in some instances. Additionally, Dragon Age: Inquisition adds a new multiplayer mode where up to four players can team up and earn some unlocks with the three additional players acting as hired help for the inquisitor that hosts the match. The new interactions are a welcome change for the series and add some longevity and replay value to an already deep experience.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is a solid looking game and produces the highest quality graphics for the series. The game is available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with improved graphics and solid framerate, though character models aren't up to part with some of the best looking games currently available on next generation consoles. The game's interesting level designs and environments fare better, and some views in the game are simply breathtaking for their sheer size and unique features alone. The game features good voice acting that combines with mostly well written dialogue to help immerse players in the experience, and an epic fantasy soundtrack compliments combat and riding through the country on mount equally exciting.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is likely to be most fans' favorite release in the Dragon Age series. The game makes some improvements for the franchise that shows up heavily in combat and character customization to make the game the most fun to play in the series. A heavy amount of supplementary content and side quests makes the game the largest the series has seen, and each mission seems to feature something unique to help avoid any repetitiveness. The game's plot is forgettable for long stretches, and while this could doom many RPGs, Dragon Age: Inquisition is so fun to play and experience for combat, missions and upgrading characters that it will keep most players satisfied for the near 100 hours of content the game contains.
