Exclusive Interview: Mary Stein Talks Little Boy

Mary Stein isn’t just one of the busiest actresses in town, she’s one of the most versatile. The actress, known for her make-up heavy turns in films like The Grinch, this time gets to wear her own mask, playing a church gossip in February release Little Boy.

BGG After Dark: What is Little Boy about?

MARY STEIN: It's the story of how a little boy in a small town during WW2. His father goes away to fight in the war. And in his absence he builds faith and learns to believe in himself. It's a dramedy and the world is set in a Norman Rockwelian world. There are other universal themes of prejudice, bullying and gossip and that speak to everyone's heart. It casts a pretty wide net audience wise. It is however a heart centered family film. My character is Martha...a church gossip who likes to stir the pot in the name of the good Lord.

BGG After Dark: You're best known for comedy. despite the subject, does this still encompass a lot of humor?

MARY STEIN: It's a dramedy. So there is a sweetness and quirky humor that is part of the story.

BGG After Dark: Where was the film shot?

MARY STEIN: On the Fox Lot overlooking the ocean in Rosarita Mexico. All my scenes were shot there. Other scenes were shot in the vicinity on location...such as the war scenes.

BGG After Dark: Did the film require you to relocate for a certain period of time?

MARY STEIN: Yes. I relocated to Rosarita Mexico and stayed at a beautiful resort a couple miles from the Fox Lot also right on the ocean. It couldn't have been lovelier. I was there for about a month and a week. But, came back to Los Angeles for a few days. The entire shoot took a few months, I believe.

BGG After Dark: Did you bond with the other actors I worked with?

MARY STEIN: Yes. I have made it my intention to cultivate enduring relationships with whoever I resonate with. And the people on this particular project were lovely. I've really enjoyed staying in touch--not just with the actors but many of the people involved with other aspects of the production.

BGG After Dark: Where does this film rank in terms of your favorite filming experience?

MARY STEIN: Hmmm. That is tough. There are so many factors involved. There were many things I loved about this experience. I loved the sweet heart centered script. I loved loved loved some of the actors. Just so great at their craft and as people....salt of the earth. I loved the place we resided. But, to rate it against other projects? For me that's tough...everything I have been fortunate enough to work on has been such a blessing and had a sweetness to it all its own...and there are always challenges too. Impossible to rate them. I will say that playing a realistic character that has her own face has been a delight! And i am thrilled  to be getting cast in dramas. I was trained as an actor and love the opportunity to play strong situations and characters.
