Exclusive Interview: Jared Cohn Talks Buddy Hutchins

Jamie Kennedy is Buddy Hutchins which is a new action-packed movie set to release sometime this month. BGG After Dark recently had the chance to chat with Director/Writer Jared Cohn about the upcoming release and what fans can expect. Read on.


BGG After Dark: Jared, do you have to be a horror-thriller fan to make a horror-thriller movie?

Jared Cohn: I would like to think that if you are making a horror/thriller that you should at least have a few horror movies that you like. I don’t think you need to be a diehard horror person, but an appreciation and respect of the genre I would say is a must.  

BGG After Dark: Where did the germ of this idea start?

Jared Cohn: I was dealing with a lot in my life when I penned the script, I was struggling, banging my head against the figurative wall over and over and to not much avail when I was writing this one. I was dealing with obstacle after obstacle, how Buddy felt, I felt: angry. I wanted to kill people, however the idea was just a fantasy, thankfully – otherwise I might be in jail or a fugitive, (ideally a fugitive) but for Buddy Hutchins he did it. He took his revenge, and it was glorious on the page. It was an outlet for me to write it. And to finally be able to shoot it and watch it all cut together was cathartic. Thankfully, I’m no longer in such a depraved mental state.  

BGG After Dark: Was there a previous relationship with Jamie Kennedy or Sally Kirkland or did they just react to the script?

Jared Cohn: I had known Jamie for a bit, I had worked with him on a prior movie where I had interviewed him for the behind the scenes. I was shooting video, and had a brief chat with him. Sally is friends with my fiancé, they had worked together on a movie, so it all worked out very nicely.  

BGG After Dark: Where was the movie shot?

Jared Cohn: LA. 

BGG After Dark: Does the film have franchise potential in your opinion?

Jared Cohn: I would love to do a sequel. Richard Switzer (the producer), what do you say?!  

BGG After Dark: What are the film’s release plans?
