Demetrius Stear plays Ryan in filmmaker Jared Cohn’s highly entertaining Buddy Hutchins. With the film hitting DVD and VOD, we caught up with Stear to talk about the witnessing of watching a ‘Scream’ alum… fall down.
BGG AFTER DARK: We spoke to Jared about the film and he agreed that you should be a fan of horror/thriller movies if you’re going to make one. What’s your perspective as an actor? Should you be a fan of these types of movies if you’re going to act in one?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: I agree. I think he is right on. I’m a believer that you have to have passion in anything you do in order to truly make it great. I’m a big fan of horror/thriller movies. I love suspense. Growing up, some of my favorite horror films are Lost Boys, Alien, Scream, Fright Night, Halloween, Prince of Darkness, and Demons, to name a few. I would watch them over and over. I still watch them (laughter).
BGG AFTER DARK: Do you have a favorite film in this genre?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: I would have to say John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness. Because it is such a well made film, it continues to hold weight even now. And, it still gives me chills every time I watch it. The Alice Cooper character is very creepy.
BGG AFTER DARK: Buddy Hutchins has a really Falling Down vibe to it. Was it pitched to you like that?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: It definitely does. I was always a big fan of Falling Down! Jared hooked me with it right off the bat when he said it has a Falling Down vibe to it. Once I read the script I can see the similarity and that got me very excited about the project.
BGG AFTER DARK: Being an independent production, I take it someone on the film must’ve known Jamie Kennedy in order to get him involved. Who was that?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: Jared put all of that together.
BGG AFTER DARK: What do you think the chances of a Buddy Hutchins 2, are?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: You just never know in this business. I think it would be cool if a few years down the road Buddy comes back to finish the job on Don. It also means I could reprise my role as Ryan so I would be happy about that. Maybe you might see a darker side to Ryan!
BGG AFTER DARK: Can you tell us what you have in the works?
DEMETRIUS STEAR: I’m getting behind the scenes with producing. I have a few projects on my plate that I’m in the process of putting financing together. I will also start shooting for a military film this summer about a soldier with PTSD.
