Telltale Games released the entire first season of Game of Thrones on November 17th for $29.99. BioGamer Girl went hands-on with the first season during Thanksgiving Break and here is our impressions of all six episodes. Read on.
Telltale Games is known for delivering an emotional, episodic adventure that manages to stay with gamers long after they stop playing. The company did an incredible job with The Walking Dead, Minecraft and Borderlands--so it is no surprise that their latest release is just as great with Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series has been based around A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George Martin alongside the incredibly popular TV adaptation Game of Thrones. The game allows players to make a variety of choices that impact the events occurring through the six-episode season while maintaining beloved characters and settings from the book and show.
The story of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series follows members of House Forrester known for their ironwood resource utilized as building materials by other houses. One downfall of the series is that it automatically assumes that players will know specific terms related to the Game of Thrones series that a first timer will not get, such as the infamous Red Wedding. So before jumping into this episodic adventure, you may want to brush up on your reading or do some binge watching of the show.
The House of Forrester is set in a beautifully wooded setting that compliments the artistic style that Telltale Games is known for. The Forresters has some similar characteristics and looks in comparison to some of the Starks but aren't as interesting as the characters in the TV show. However, over the course of six episodes, the characters (Mira, Gregor, Elissa, Rodrik, Elaena, Asher, Ethan, Talia, and Ryon) slowly start to grow on you which makes their survival that much more important. The story is filled with uncertainty, politics, and unrelenting violence just like the TV show and is overall an enjoyable recreation of what fans would expect from the series.
The best thing about Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series is that die-hard fans of the show actually get to make some of the tough decisions for themselves. Instead of imagining what would have happened if a character had chose differently, players actually get to test out a wide array of actions to see what could unfold. Fans actually get to become characters in the Game of Thrones and the way they play is entirely up to them. There are times when your decisions can seem like they impact the overall picture very little, but to many fans, the ability to make that decision is all that matters.
In the end, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series is a enjoyable adventure into the land of Westeros. While the Forresters aren’t as compelling as the other houses and the game does rely heavingly on cliffhangers, the series does manage to capture the overall essence that the TV show is known for.
Score: 8 out of 10
