Geek Parenting (Book Review)

Quirk Books has released Geek Parenting: What Joffrey, Jor-El, Maleficent and the McFlys Teach Us about Raising a Family.

Authors Stephen H. Segal and Valya Dudycz Lupescu have compiled a marvelous book of lessons from some of the best examples in geek culture. Some of the parent/child relationships in the book include Vader and Luke, Spock and Sarek, Peter Parker and Aunt May, even Pinocchio and Gepetto.

Geek Parenting offers some intriguing and effective methods for raising your geek children and keeping them from the dark side.

The chapters in the book focus on various aspects of parenting from early development to helping them evolve into advanced human beings. Every chapter in Geek Parenting has been written in such as way that readers can not only understand but relate to.

Topics include:
  • Creating a Happy Home: The Grandson and the Grandfather from The Princess Bride teach us about the importance of reading to children. Thor and Loki teach us that sibling rivalry is normal. And Lydia, Charles and Delia Deetz from Beetlejuice teach us that a spur-of-the-moment dance party is an excellent method for renewing everyone's energy to conquer the next task at hand.
  • Preparing Your Child in the World: Cersei Lannister and Joffrey Baratheon from Game of Thrones teach us that it's up to parents to guide their kids to become humane adults. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from Star Wars teach us that we shouldn't force our kids to follow in our footsteps.
  • Communicating with Your Child: E.T., Elliot, Gertie, Michael, and Mary teach us to listen when your children phone home. Peter Parker and Aunt May from The Amazing Spider-Man teach us to make it clear early and often that, whatever path they take, we'll always love them.

In the end, Geek Parenting is a fantastic book for parents looking to raise children today, and has some fabulous examples from Geek culture that everyone can comprehend. I greatly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a little advice on how to make sure the force is strong with their children.
