Mash Up (Book Review)

Titan Books has released Mash Up edited by Gardner Dozois for $14.95.

The book synopsis reads:

Pride and Prejudice meets Macbeth by way of Moby Dick and a dollop of the speculative, in this hugely entertaining anthology where authors such as John Scalzi get inspiration for short stories from the first lines of famous works of literature. Edited by hugely respected anthologist Gardner Dozois, the collection includes stories by John Scalzi, Tad Williams, Elizabeth Bear and many others.

The paperback book is 416 pages and includes works from such noteworthy authors as Gardner Dozois , John Scalzi , Tad Williams , Elizabeth Bear , Mike Resnick , Nancy Kress , Daryl Gregory , Jack Campbell , Paul Di Filippo , Robert Charles Wilson , Allen M. Steele , Lavie Tidhar , Mary Robinette Kowal , and James Patrick Kelly.

The idea for Mash Up came about in 2007 with the simple concept of each author taking the first sentence of a favorite classic and use it as the first sentence in their original story. Following that simple method, Mash Up gathers a collection of intriguing short stories into one paperback book that everyone can enjoy.

Mash Up is a fantastic collection of stories from different authors who bring their own unique perspective to each one. I enjoyed every story within Mash Up but Writer's Block by Nancy Kress really spoke to me. The story started with the first line, "It was a dark and stormy night. But it shouldn't have been." It pulled you in and kept you stuck to every page as the story unfolded and this is true of most of the short pieces in Mash Up. In the end, Mash Up is a great collection of short stories based on a powerful yet simple premise. To learn more, visit the official Mash Up website.

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...
