Meridian: Squad 22 (Video Game Review)

Headup Games has released Meridian: Squad 22 for PC.

Meridian: Squad 22 mixes the elements of single-player science-fiction with that of real-time strategy games. Meridian: Squad 22 isn't your typical RTS but still manages to focus on base building and advanced tactics.

The game doesn't focus on any single choice, but it is a collection of all of your choices and tactical decisions that ultimately shape the outcome of your story. The game takes place in a world where humanity is in peril. The game takes place after the first colonization attempt of mankind has completely failed with the colonist crew now missing. The US leaders have decided to send a special squad from Earth to scour the planet of Meridian and find the missing crew.

Meridian: Squad 22 is a game that tries to stand out in the crowded market but still has a lot of similarities to Starcraft. It is obvious from early on that Meridian: Squad 22 doesn't have the high-end presentation and animations of the popular Blizzard game. While there are some great RPG elements and voice acting, Meridian: Squad 22 mirrors Starcraft so much that its hard not to ultimately compare the two.

The storyline for Meridian: Squad 22 offers up around ten hours of gameplay across hundred missions. The game feels oddly familiar to most games you have played before. You land on an alien planet where you must build your base and then go around killing things. As you find scattered resources around the map, you are able to unlock new content to build your army. Players are tasked with completing very simple missions that help you take territory and open new paths of the storyline.

In the end, Meridian: Squad 22 is a decent indie game that offers up some fun RTS and RPG elements that feel very old school. However, the game doesn't do enough to stand out in the market and opens itself up to the criticism that it tries too hard to be like the bigger budget games without the "WOW" factor of those titles.

Features:
  • Control the fate of Squad 22 and the colonists in the 10+ hour story-mode campaign
  • Vanquish your foes on planet Meridian in over 100 procedurally generated missions in Planetary Conquest
  • Polished, dynamic and fluid unit control
  • Over one hour of immersive music
  • Fantastic sound effects brought to you by an award-winning sound design team.

Score: 6 out of 10
