Titanfall 2 Open Multiplayer Technical Test Hands-On Impressions

EA and Respawn have given fans a chance to go hands on with Titanfall 2 this month.

Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts announced the Titanfall 2 Open Multiplayer Technical Test earlier this month which would take place during two weekends in August for the PS4 and Xbox One.

The technical test was a chance for gamers to delve into the fast, fluid, Pilot and Titan gameplay that makes up the entire Titanfall experience. The first test started on August 19th and allowed players to test out several multiplayer modes across two maps.

The Game Modes Available In The First Technical Test:
  • Bounty Hunt (5v5): A brand new mode that pits Pilots and their teammates against an opposing team as well as the Remnant Fleet. Earn bonuses by killing grunts and enemies, but make sure and deposit all your points at the bank between waves without getting killed.
  • Pilots vs. Pilots (8v8): Players can be the best Pilot on the Frontier and put their combat and mobility skills to the ultimate test in this classic 8 vs 8 Pilots only mode.

The Game Maps Available In The First Technical Test:

  • Boomtown: A secret underground IMC facility where the latest in R&D is put to the test. In this facility Pilots can use the many peaked roofs to use as cover against combatants below. With tight lanes through the middle, Titans can also be easily ambushed.
  • Homestead: The IMC have claimed Eminent Domain on a small commune’s plot of land. With a series of raised, rocky plateaus and a river running down the middle, Pilots are mostly safe from Titans among the rocks and trees but they also can duck into the caves and building when needed. However, the Titans control the large rolling fields.

The Titanfall 2 Open Multiplayer Technical Test #2 started this weekend and delivered all of the content from the previous weekend, plus a brand new mode and map:

Additional Game Modes Available In The Second Technical Test:

  • Amped Hardpoint (6v6): A new twist on Hardpoint Domination from the original game; now defending a Hardpoint will let you amp it, giving your team double score. Team work is the key to securing victory.

Additional Game Maps Available In The Second Technical Test:

  • Forward Base Kodai: Militia forces have taken over an IMC substation and set up a forward operating base. Pilots can find safety from Titans in the hallways and chambers of the main building, while Titans can walk over the roof to get a better view of the action.

Titanfall 2 will also debut the new offline single player experience that puts gamers into the shoes of a Militia rifleman who dreams of being an elite Pilot. The campaign throws the player behind enemy lines where they must team up with a veteran Titan to carry out their mission.

Players had access to two all-new Titans during the multiplayer technical tests that included Ion and Scorch. These titans can with a range of pilot tactical abilities such as Grapple, Holo Point, and Pulse Blade. There were a variety of weapons available during the test that included the horizontal spread shotgun known as the Masttiff and the Alternator, a dual-barrel SMG. There was also the chance for players to earn their first Callsign during the second technical test.

The second technical test added several improvements that included:

TIME TO KILL
  • Amped Weapons Boost now unlocks at 80% of the earn meter instead of 50%.
  • Charge Rifles now have damage falloff at cross map distances.
  • Slightly increased cloak visibility for other Pilots.
MOBILITY
  • Increased max wall-running speed.
  • Increased base wall-running speed and air speed.
  • Increased acceleration while jumping off walls.
  • Titans dashes recharge 2 seconds faster.
TITAN TIMER

BOUNTY HUNT
  • Score Limit lowered to 5000 from 6000 to increase the amount of games won by score instead of time.
  • Banking phases now last 45 seconds instead of a minute.
TECHNICAL FIXES
  • Fixed some issues with the outer deadzone on PlayStation controllers.

Final Verdict:

Titanfall 2 currently has a few issues as it prepares for final release on October 28th for Xbox One, PC and PS4. The 'Invite Friends' element was still broken by the end of the second technical test, but overall the game is shaping up to be a fun experience for diehard Titanfall fans.
