Quirk Books will release Wonder Women on October 18th for $16.99.
Ever heard of Allied spy Noor Inayat Khan, a Muslim woman whom the Nazis considered “highly dangerous”? Or German painter and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian, who planned and embarked on the world’s first scientific expedition? How about Huang Daopo, the inventor who fled an abusive child marriage only to revolutionize textile production in China?
Women have always been able to change the world, even when they didn’t get the credit. In Wonder Women, author Sam Maggs introduces you to pioneering female scientists, engineers, mathematicians, adventurers, and inventors—each profile a study in passion, smarts, and stickto-itiveness, complete with portraits by Google doodler Sophia Foster-Dimino, an extensive bibliography, and a guide to present-day women-centric STEM organizations.
Wonder Women is a book about smart, pioneering women from the past. The book breaks up the featured women by five categories: Women of Science, Women of Medicine, Women of Espionage, Women of Innovation and Women of Adventure. The book isn't just about great women from history, but it also features Q&A's with today's visionary women, like STEM founder Dr. Buddhini Samarasinghe.
The book is very inspirational. Some of the things readers will learn includes how Otto Hahn won the Noble Prize for discovering nuclear fission and how Huang Daopo escaped an abusive home and arranged marriage to later invent the cotton gin. The triumphant stories show how strong women managed to persevere and accomplish great things throughout history.
Sam Maggs stated that, Hero' status isn't reserved for people who look like Superman"--anyone, from anywhere, can accomplish great things. The proof lies within the pages of Wonder Women.
In the end, the 240 page book Wonder Women was a fantastic read with beautiful illustrations, and definitely worth picking up when it releases on October 18th. To learn more, visit the official Quirk Books website.
