Steel Rats Review (PS4)

Tate Multimedia has released Steel Rats for PS4, Mac, and PC, bringing a loud, stylish, and kinetic blend of motorbike combat and arcade platforming to consoles and computers alike. The game immediately stands out thanks to its bold personality and commitment to pure, adrenaline-fueled action.

In Steel Rats, players strap on spiked shoulder pads and rev their engines for intense 2.5D motorbike mayhem. Rather than traditional on-foot combat, your motorcycle becomes your primary weapon, tool, and lifeline as you tear through hostile environments.

The game takes place in a retro-future version of an alternate 1940s America, where dieselpunk aesthetics collide with sci-fi technology. This unique setting gives Steel Rats a distinctive visual identity that feels both nostalgic and futuristic at the same time.

At the heart of the story is the Steel Rats themselves, a punk biker gang that once ruled the streets of Coastal City. When an invading horde of junkbots threatens their way of life, the gang is forced back into action to defend what they built.

While the narrative isn’t overly complex, it serves its purpose well by providing motivation and flavor. The focus is clearly on action, style, and momentum rather than deep storytelling, and the game embraces that strength.

Players can choose from multiple characters, each with their own personality and visual flair. These characters don’t drastically change gameplay, but they help reinforce the game’s rebellious tone and comic-book energy.

Bike customization plays a major role in progression. As you advance, you unlock new abilities, upgrades, and weapons that transform your motorcycle into a versatile machine of destruction.

Your bike is your most powerful weapon, capable of crushing enemies, launching projectiles, and performing acrobatic maneuvers. Combat often feels like a deadly dance as you flip, spin, and slam your way through waves of enemies.

One of Steel Rats’ biggest strengths is its physics-based control system. The weight and momentum of your bike matter, making every jump, landing, and flip feel earned rather than automatic.

The 2.5D level design encourages experimentation, pushing players to think vertically as well as horizontally. Rooftops, tunnels, ramps, and destructible objects keep environments dynamic and engaging.

Combat encounters strike a satisfying balance between chaos and control. Timing your attacks and managing momentum is key, especially during larger enemy encounters and boss battles.

Boss fights are a highlight, often requiring players to learn patterns and adapt their riding style. These encounters feel appropriately cinematic and test your mastery of the game’s mechanics.

Visually, Steel Rats is striking, with bold colors, sharp lighting, and exaggerated character designs. The retro-futuristic cityscapes are packed with detail and help bring Coastal City to life.

The soundtrack complements the game’s tone perfectly, featuring heavy, driving music that fuels the action. Sound effects—from roaring engines to crunching metal—add to the game’s visceral impact.

Difficulty ramps up steadily, offering a fair challenge without becoming overly punishing. While some sections may require retries, the fast restarts keep frustration to a minimum.

Replay value comes from upgrading bikes, mastering levels, and chasing better performance. Completionists will find plenty of incentives to revisit stages and refine their skills.

Despite its strengths, Steel Rats isn’t without minor flaws. The gameplay loop can feel repetitive during longer sessions, and players looking for narrative depth may feel underserved.

However, the game’s commitment to its core concept helps it stand out. It knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers a focused, high-energy experience.

Steel Rats excels when it lets players feel powerful, stylish, and slightly out of control. Few games capture the fantasy of weaponized motorbike combat with this level of confidence.

In the end, Steel Rats is a fun and entertaining arcade experience that delivers a unique blend of racing, combat, and platforming. It may not reinvent the genre, but it offers a memorable ride for players willing to embrace its chaos.
