A crashing computer is one of the most annoying daily occurrences we deal with in the digital age. If you’re someone who works online, or from a desk on a daily basis, then you know it can take a lot of time out of your day.
But it doesn’t have to be a one way street - a computer crash can be easily dealt with, and even stopped ahead of time. As long as you know what’s going on inside your PC or laptop, and you know a few shortcuts, you’ll be the most tech savvy person in the office. So, here are some tips for you!
Get to Grips with Force Quitting
If you’re running an application, and that itself crashes, a lot of us are going to groan in annoyance and have to turn the PC off and on again. So, before the next crash occurs, learn how to force quit a program properly!
It’s honestly quite simple: first of all, you need to remove the application’s ‘always on top’ privileges. This is what stops task manager from appearing when you press ‘ctrl+alt+delete’, and it’s a very simple fix that’ll keep your PC chugging along for the rest of the day. If you’re using a mac, check out how to force quit on Mac, but for windows, open task manager now, and click the options tab, and then check the ‘always on top’ box. This means an application will never stop you from force quitting ever again!
Check (and pad out) Your Storage
Computers have a standard amount of storage to them, and every so often, this is going to need a clear out. Unless you can pay for the upgrades, even just temporary files are going to bog you down.
If it’s full, your computer is going to be very slow, and the screen is going to freeze from time to time. And if you need to keep a lot of files and apps on your computer, invest in another hard drive to store the bulk on, and also in an SSD. This’ll speed up your load time whenever you press the power button in the morning!
Update as Soon as Possible
We all put off OS updates for as long as possible - it might take hours, and we need the computer right now! But as soon as you get the chance, be sure to queue up the update, and try to automate them to occur when you shut down at night.
If you’re using outdated software, you’re going to experience quite a few more crashes in your system. And the same goes for your GPU; make sure the drivers you’re using are the most recent the company has released. If you’re a gamer, you know just how much an old version of Geforce can interrupt your RPG or zombie slashing time!
If you know how to stop a computer crashing, you’ll keep your computer from blue screening and audio jarring before it gets the chance!
