Borderlands 3 Review (Xbox One)

2K Games and Gearbox Software have released Borderlands 3. Read on to learn more.

If you are like me, then you have waited many years for the release of Borderlands 3. There are not many franchises that truly earn a permanent place in a gamer’s heart, but Borderlands is one of those rare series that does exactly that. From the moment I first set foot on Pandora, I was hooked by the quirky characters, off-the-wall humor, phenomenal voice acting, and the instantly recognizable cel-shaded art style that made the series stand out from everything else on the market.

Waiting a long time for a sequel is always risky. Expectations build, nostalgia takes hold, and there is always that lingering fear that developers might change too much of what made the original games special. Thankfully, Borderlands 3 understands exactly what fans want. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but instead refines and expands on the formula that made the series beloved in the first place.

At its core, Borderlands 3 delivers the same chaotic, loot-driven, first-person shooter experience fans know and love. The gunplay feels tighter and more responsive than ever before, making every firefight feel satisfying. Explosions are bigger, abilities feel more impactful, and combat flows smoothly whether you are playing solo or with friends.

One of the biggest highlights of the game is the sheer number of weapons available. Borderlands 3 takes its “bazillions of guns” slogan seriously, offering an overwhelming variety of firearms that differ in behavior, elemental effects, and absurd gimmicks. No two guns ever feel exactly the same, and discovering a new legendary weapon is always exciting.

Enemy variety has also been expanded significantly. While familiar bandits and creatures return, players will encounter a wide range of new foes that keep combat feeling fresh. Each enemy type requires a slightly different approach, encouraging players to experiment with weapons and abilities rather than relying on a single strategy.

The introduction of four brand-new Vault Hunters adds even more depth to the experience. Moze, Amara, FL4K, and Zane each bring unique playstyles that cater to different types of players. Whether you prefer brute force, crowd control, tactical support, or pet-based combat, there is a Vault Hunter that fits your style perfectly.

Moze, the Gunner, is a standout thanks to her ability to digistruct and pilot a massive mech known as Iron Bear. This ability is not only incredibly powerful but also immensely satisfying, turning the tide of battle in intense encounters. Iron Bear feels like a true power fantasy, especially when surrounded by waves of enemies.

Amara, the Siren, excels in elemental damage and crowd control. Her ethereal fists and special abilities allow her to smash enemies from a distance or dive headfirst into combat. She is perfect for players who enjoy a more aggressive, ability-focused playstyle that emphasizes raw power and flashy attacks.

FL4K, the Beastmaster, offers a unique experience by allowing players to fight alongside AI-controlled pets. These companions are more than just cosmetic additions; they actively participate in combat and can be customized to suit different strategies. FL4K’s playstyle rewards careful positioning and tactical thinking.

Zane, the Operative, rounds out the roster with a versatile kit built around gadgets and mobility. His ability to deploy drones, barriers, and holographic clones makes him incredibly adaptable. Zane shines in co-op play, where his tools can support teammates and control the battlefield.

One of the most exciting changes in Borderlands 3 is the ability to explore worlds beyond Pandora. While the iconic wasteland remains central to the series, players now travel to entirely new planets that each have their own unique environments, enemies, and visual styles. This adds a sense of scale and adventure that previous games only hinted at.

After progressing through the story, players gain access to Sanctuary III, a massive ship that serves as a mobile hub. From here, you can travel to planets like Athenas, EDEN-6, and Promethea. Each location feels distinct, offering new challenges and reinforcing the feeling that the universe of Borderlands is bigger than ever before.

Content is another area where Borderlands 3 truly shines. Between the main story missions and the abundance of side quests, there is an incredible amount to do. Side missions are just as entertaining as the main story, often featuring hilarious writing, memorable characters, and worthwhile rewards.

Replayability is off the charts thanks to the loot system, character builds, and difficulty scaling. Whether you want to experiment with a new Vault Hunter, chase rare gear, or replay missions at higher difficulty levels, Borderlands 3 offers countless reasons to keep coming back for more.

For newcomers to the series, Borderlands 3 is surprisingly approachable. While longtime fans will appreciate returning characters and references, the game does a great job of welcoming new players. You don’t need extensive knowledge of previous titles to enjoy the story or gameplay.

The RPG elements blend seamlessly with the first-person shooting mechanics. As you defeat enemies, they drop weapons, gear, and currency, fueling that addictive loot loop. Gaining experience unlocks skill points that allow players to customize their character through deep and flexible skill trees.

If you ever feel like experimenting with a different build, Borderlands 3 makes it easy. For a small fee, you can reset your skill points and try a new approach without penalty. This flexibility encourages experimentation and keeps gameplay feeling fresh.

The main storyline centers around the Calypso Twins, Troy and Tyreen, who lead a cult-like army with ambitions to harness the power of the Vaults. These antagonists are loud, obnoxious, and intentionally over-the-top, fitting perfectly into the chaotic tone of the series. They constantly taunt the player, making every victory over their forces feel rewarding.

Fans will also be happy to see the return of many beloved characters, including Maya, Moxxi, Ellie, and more. Their presence adds a strong sense of continuity and nostalgia, making the game feel like a true continuation rather than a reboot. It feels like picking up right where you left off.

In the end, Borderlands 3 is a triumphant return to form. It successfully balances nostalgia with innovation, delivering an experience that feels both familiar and exciting. With memorable characters, engaging gameplay, and an overwhelming amount of content, it stands as one of the strongest entries in the franchise.

Borderlands 3 is a charming, chaotic, and thoroughly entertaining adventure that delivers on nearly every promise. If you are looking for a game packed with humor, action, and endless loot, this is an experience you should not miss.
