Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig (Video Game Review)

Sunset Overdrive was one of the best video games to release in 2014 and was easily our favorite Xbox One exclusive for the year. Developer Insomniac has already released additional content for the game with the Weapons Pack released back in December, and the game has expanded even more with the new release of Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig. Where the first add-on for the game added four additional weapons, players receive a brand new location to explore, two new weapons and amps, seven new missions and some additional collectibles. All of this content is made available for $10 and will take most gamers 4 or 5 hours to complete from start to finish.

Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig offers much of the same in terms of gameplay from the game's main campaign. Players will be tasked with heading to an overrun oil rig to take down enemies with the help of Troop Master Bryllcream. The storyline is mostly filler for the title but there are some funny and entertaining moments throughout the brief narrative that endures for a few hours of chaos.

There are seven new missions included with Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig. The objectives are varied and include anything from protecting a key area of the map from enemy attacks to whisking around the battlefield and narrowly avoiding incoming tentacle attacks. Additional collectibles are scattered around the oil rig including several UFOs that must be collected to fully complete the DLC. The add-on will last most players between four and five hours, but it's entertaining enough to make the purchase worth the asking price for most fans of the Xbox One exclusive.

The Mooil Rig is a blast to explore in the new add-on. The large oil rig features all sorts of rails and pipes to allow players to grind up, down and all around the structure, while new controls have been added to give players even more freedom to explore the open world. The game's main character now has the ability to dive and swim through the water like a dolphin, and the player can also make the character hop along the top of the water with ease. The new movements are a welcome addition not seen in the original game, and it makes exploring the rig much more enjoyable for its inclusion.

The DLC adds two new weapons and amps. The Rivet Blaster is a bit of a letdown as a gun that is designed to easily take down robot enemies, despite the lack of these types of enemies seen anywhere through the new campaign. Feel the Burn is a much more appropriate weapon; the flamethrower allows players to easily mow down enemy hordes with the power of a handheld napalm launcher. The amps added in the game are pretty interesting as well and includes an ability to make enemies fall in a pool of oil upon death randomly, which then allows players to set the oil ablaze for even more damage on enemy hordes.

The trip to the oil rig in Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig is short but sweet. Fans of Sunset Overdrive will find plenty to enjoy with the new DLC, and there is just enough content included in the release to make it worth a purchase. Most player can fully complete the DLC within 5 hours of starting the new campaign, but the missions and dialogue featured in the add-on are entertaining, and most of the new weapons are worth adding to the player's arsenal for use in Mystery of the Mooil Rig and the game's original campaign. Have a blast in Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig out now for Xbox One.

Sunset Overdrive: Mystery of the Mooil Rig is now available exclusively for Xbox One and can be purchased for $9.99. Sunset Overdrive is rated M by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Sexual Themes, Strong Language & Violence.
