Mortal Kombat X (Video Game Review)

When you talk about fighting games, you have to mention Mortal Kombat at all costs, as this is one of the most impressive games in this genre. With Mortal Kombat X, the series is taken to the next generation consoles, and I have to say that it does a stellar introduction in this regard. Story Although few people will play Mortal Kombat X for the story, there is a plot here, and an interesting one that spans over two decades. It’s not that exciting to be honest, but it does use all the characters in a very intriguing way, which is a plus. Gameplay The gameplay is by far where Mortal Kombat X shines. There are a few new characters that are taken from the future displayed in the campaign, but at the same time there are some new mechanics. No matter the character you choose, you can interact with the environment and, at the same time, you can choose three different variations for each character, which is quite impressive to be honest. Each variation does have its own set of inter...

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China (Video Game Review)

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is a game that tries to take the critically acclaimed series to a whole new level, which is basically the 2.5 dimension. It’s clear competitor in this regard is Mark of Ninja, with whom Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China does share many ideas, but on the other hand it is nice to see the Assassin's Creed series from another perspective. Story In this game you follow the story of Shao Jun, which is a Chinese assassin that tries to kill the Templar group of Eight Tigers, which presumably wreaked havoc onto the natal land. Because of that, the story gets quite personal, but thankfully there are numerous twists and turns that will make the game very interesting as you advance. Gameplay As mentioned earlier, Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China does manage to provide you with a variety of unique challenges, that start rather easily with the introduction of 2.5D battles, but for me the most exciting stuff comes in the form of 2D assassi...

Bloodborne (Video Game Review)

Many games nowadays are criticized for being too easy, but Dark Souls was a great example which clearly showed that the RPG genre can still bring in quite a challenge. Bloodborne is created by From Software, the same company that brought in the aforementioned title, and despite the change of style, at its core it brings a similar gameplay. Story The game brings you into the middle of a city that is called Yharnam where you need to defeat all the monsters which were previous inhabitants, all with the main purpose of saving it. The downside is that these blood drinking creatures have been created by a major evil, whose source you need to find and stop as you play. The story overall is quite nice and it does bring numerous moments of intrigue! Gameplay What I like about the gameplay in Bloodborne is the fact that it’s action packed and it has a ton of stuff from the other titles that From Software created, yet it also manages to hold your own. You can head to a safezone if things get ba...

Kalimba (Video Game Review)

Puzzle platformers are popular right now, but most of them tend to follow a certain pattern. This is not the case of Kalimba however, because here the players have to move the pieces of a totem pole as they go through a variety of levels, all with the main purpose of avoiding obstacles as fast as possible. Story There is a small story here, related to a noble shaman that uses a sacred totem pole in order to save the people, but the pole quickly gets destroyed and an evil shaman manages to take control of the land, something you need to try and stop at all costs if you want to stay alive. Gameplay In Kalimba you will control two colored pieces of the totem, and when you move a single piece, the second one will copy the action as well. You will need to find a pattern so that both pieces go through the level seamlessly and reach the end. What I found interesting in Kalimba is that if a piece is lost while getting touched by other pieces or enemies, you will actually lose both ...

The Evil Within: The Consequence (Video Game Review)

The Evil Within was a great horror game despite its own mishaps, but the dev team tries to get things right with The Consequence, the second DLC. In this game we will play as Juli Kidman which is actually guided by some malevolent forces, against her own will. It’s nice to see that the intense and scary psycho horror concepts from the game can be seen in the DLC as well, however I do feel that the character does encounter the boss too many times, something that manages to make the gameplay less impressive as the main game. The Evil Within: The Consequence also seems to focus on the stealth gameplay that has made the series worth watching, however in this DLC the stealth is indeed interrupted by other things that don’t really manage to do justice to the game. What I do like in The Evil Within: The Consequence is that the story does move forward and you keep the air tension. The enemies are nice, but aside from a few, yet notable ones, they are roughly the same as you would expect. ...

Slow Down, Bull (Video Game Review)

Nowadays, games tend to have fancy graphics and complex gameplay, but there are titles such as Slow Down Bull that step aside from the normal AAA fandom in order to create an experience that is simple, yet very appealing. In Slow Down Bull , you take control of a bull named Esteban that wants to collect all the possible art that can be encountered within the level. The title focuses a lot on the interaction that you, the bull, have with the environment and the things you do when you explore the large game world. There are 5 different areas that you can explore as you see fit, and each one comes with its own range of challenges. The main idea still remains that you have to collect as much art as possible that was scattered in the game world by steering the bull. However, do not stress the bull by moving too many times, as this can increase the stress level of the animal and it will lead to numerous issues. When stressed, the bull will attack other people in the game world and...

Exclusive Interview: Jonah Ehrenreich Discusses Hooked Up

With his latest movie shot completely on an iPhone, there was only one way to open our interview with Hooked Up star Jonah Ehrenreich – and no, it didn’t begin with us asking ‘what’s APPening!?’ BGG AFTER DARK: So do you have an iPhone? JONAH EHRENREICH: Yes, I finally got one about a year and a half ago, because my ex-girlfriend would make fun of me a lot for still having a flip phone. Maybe that’s why she’s my ex-girlfriend. BGG AFTER DARK: How challenging was it making a movie with an iPhone? Or was that less your challenge and more director Pablo Larucen’s? JONAH EHRENREICH: The technical aspects were Pablo’s challenge as far as having to rotate 3 or 4 iPhones in and out constantly so they could upload footage and recharge. If the battery got below a certain level the phone would start to lag and cause interference with the frame rate and picture quality so we had even less battery power than you think. A challenge for me as an actor was having to address the DP who is holdi...
