Undead L.A. 1 (Book Review)

Undead L.A. 1 by Devan Sagliani is 360 pages of horrific goodness and is possibly one of the best zombie books we have ever read. The book starts out with a small introduction to get readers prepared for the horrific adventure to unfold over the next six chapters. The outbreak started on September 20th on Skid Row in Los Angeles and spread like a waking nightmare across the city. Ready to learn more? Read on. The author has done a wonderful job of taking the reader from the pages of Undead L.A. 1 and transferring them into the fictional story that he has created. Undead L.A. 1 is unfolded in a very unique way and contains some of the most well-developed characters to ever appear in a book. Undead L.A. 1 reads like a love-letter to horror fans and focuses on the stories of several Angelenos left in the aftermath of the zombie virus. Frozen Cortex (Video Game Review)

Developer Mode 7 has followed up the successful release of Frozen Synapse in 2011 with Frozen Cortex . The new game drops combat and presents players with a strategic sports game that combines real-time strategy elements with American football. There is definitely a select group of gamers that will be attracted to Frozen Cortex ; sports fans may not enjoy the robot teams and unconventional rules, while many strategy game players probably aren't big sports fans. Frozen Cortex does what it sets out to do though with only a few hiccups, so it should still be on most gamers' as a title they may want to download in the near future. Frozen Cortex plays much like NFL and NCAA football but with five players on the field for each team. Teams take turns playing offense and defense until one team scores a touchdown. Points can also be scored by possessing the ball inside of special designated zones around the field, and additional rule changes include single downs per possession an...

The Escapists (Video Game Review)

The Escapists is a new downloadable title from developer Mouldy Toof Studios and publisher Team17 that features addictive gameplay in a prison setting. The Escapists shares many similarities with a title such as Prison Architect or the opening levels of Monaco: What's Yours is Mine , but The Escapists keeps the jailbreak gameplay alive for its entire duration and introduces crafting and RPG elements to make the game even more interesting. The Escapists can be downright punishing at times, but thanks to a great aesthetic and a solid amount of original and enjoyable content, this is one prison gamers will be excited to visit. The Escapists casts players as a prisoner that must find a way to escape his current prison confines. The game is full of different prisoners and guards all with their own unique personalities and tendencies, but the game never fully expands on any one character in the game, so players are left to make up their own storylines for themselves while playi...

Sunless Sea (Video Game Review)

Sunless Sea is a new release from developer Failbetter Games that combines the unique elements of naval combat with roguelike mechanics to create another unique title available on Steam. The name of the game truly describes the setting in Sunless Sea , as players continue to explore a vast, unexplored ocean that is completely darkened at the start of the player's maiden voyage. Exploring the waters in the game can be a bit creepy with plenty of sea monsters and enemy ships ready to prey on unsuspecting sailors, while roguelike elements make each mission feel different from the next. Sunless Sea offers an entertaining look at a seldom seen game genre in today's industry. Sunless Sea 's dark exterior masks some very excellent writing and a strong storyline. The game takes players to an alternate version of Fallen London, where the primary goals are to explore uncharted waters and discover hidden treasures and land in the surrounding darkness. There are plenty of charact...

Grow Home (Video Game Review)

Grow Home is a new game from Ubisoft and their development studio Reflections that casts players as a robot sent to an uncivilized planet to grow a special tree and harvest its seeds needed to save the protagonist's home planet. The Botanical Utility Droid or B.U.D. is the star of the game, and his quirky characteristics is one big reason that Grow Home is a game to remember. The game is presented with a unique style that is reminiscent of classic platforming games from the PlayStation era with advanced graphics that are presented in excellent cel-shaded form. Grow Home is a truly great experience for gamers during the roughly 10-hour long campaign. The world of Grow Home is presented with a last robot on the planet narrative. B.U.D.'s only companion on the adventure is an artificial intelligence appropriately codenamed M.O.M. that guides the player though the game's opening tutorial and beyond. The game's storyline unfolds as almost a coming of age tale, as the...

The Order: 1886 (Video Game Review)

One of the most anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusives was revealed at E3 2013 from developer Ready At Dawn. The Order: 1886 has finally arrived, and the gorgeous and atmospheric adventure game is definitely a unique title for the console. The game can most easily draw comparisons to the Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome , though the former features more gunplay than melee combat. The result is an experience that is gorgeous to behold but often too automated to be as exciting or interactive as most other games. The Order: 1886 is still a fun game well worth checking out for PlayStation 4 owners, but fans shouldn't expect to get much more out of the game and its single player only experience than the 7-10 hours it takes to complete the game's main campaign for the first time. Players take on the role of Sir Galahad, a member of The Order, who battles against half breed, werewolf like monsters. The Order is descended from the ancestors of King Arthur and the Knights of the...

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (Video Game Review)

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D reimagines one of the best games in quite possibly the most popular video game franchise of all-time. The game introduced several unique ideas for the franchise, and the game was a truly strange title at the time of its release from the oddly shaped moon that constantly gave an ominous overhang to the action on the ground to the strange inhabitants of the citizens of Termina. The new release adds new and improved features for the game that are not simply limited to the game's 3D graphics. Some concepts from the 2000 release still cause a few issues while playing the game, and not all of the new features are perfectly executed, but the newly released remake is still worth checking out, especially for gamers that have yet to experience the classic game. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D picks up shortly after the adventure presented in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time . The hero of time, Link, is traveling through the woods ...

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Video Game Review)

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate continues the great Capcom series with a new release available exclusively on Nintendo 3DS systems. The new game is massive; weapons are big, monsters are even larger and the game as a whole is enormous. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate provides hours of entertainment with a greatest hits collection of monsters from the entire Monster Hunter series, and there are over 100 new items to craft and find throughout the single player campaign. Throw in online multiplayer for up to four different hunters and other StreetPass content, and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is clearly a game that is worth picking up for newcomers and longtime fans Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has a more complex plot than previous releases in the series, but the storyline still isn't the new release's most important factor. Players take the role of a hunter in training, whose group is attacked by a massive dragon before being dragged into a thick plot of deceit that includes the search f...
