Unity of Command (Video Game Review)

Playing Unity of Command is much like the experience you get when trying a new and rather difficult hobby for the first time. The initial experience is likely to be met with an amount of frustration and swearing akin to slamming your hand in a car door. However, once you've managed to get some traction the immense feeling of accomplishment when you finally complete a scenario is so euphoric you keep on coming back for more. Unity of Command puts you in the generals chair of either the German or Russian forces on the eastern front of WWII. The different sides have unique advantages and disadvantages depending on the scenario, Tiger tanks will decimate nearly anything put into their path but if you can successfully outflank them you can quickly cut their supply lines making them unable to fire and move. In fact, the majority of the game will be spend staring at the supply map debating if you have the forces to make that final push. Make the wrong call and you'll quickly find yo...

Painkiller Hell & Damnation (Video Game Review)

Painkiller Hell & Damnation is the newest release from developer The Farm 51 and publisher Nordic Games. The new title is actually a remake of the original title Painkiller that released back in 2004, rebuilt on Unreal Engine 3. The game packs challenging scenarios and classic gameplay into a pretty package that definitely stands out as one of the best looking shooters around. You won't find your modern weapons, health regeneration, upgradeable firearms and kill-streaks in Painkiller Hell & Damnation , but the game does add some great new multiplayer modes including competitive variants like Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Painkiller Hell & Damnation is a first-person shooter game for old-school fans, so the timid and weak stomached need not apply! In Painkiller Hell & Damnation , you play as the protagonist, Daniel Garner, who has been sent into Purgatory to do battle with the menacing demons and ghouls that inhabit the supernatural landscape. Daniel h...

Hotline Miami Developer Offering Tech Support and Patches to Pirates

Well, there's something you don't see everyday. In response to seeing his game on Piratebay Jonatan Soderstorm didn't send a takedown notice or blame piracy for sales. Instead, he went on the torrent and offered suggestions for ways to get around bugs in the game and even promised patches for all those playing, paying customers or otherwise. "I don't really want people to pirate Hotline Miami, but I understand if they do," Soderstorm tweeted. He also added that he knows what it's like to want to play a new game but not be financially able to purchase it. If the overall positive response to indie developers not fighting against piracy via DRM or Heavy Handed takedown notices it's that working with pirates will make far more progress than working against them ever has. Piratebay even ran a pay what you want program for McPixel after the developers took a similar stance on piracy.

Top 5 Unforgettable Video Game Items

When playing your favorite video games there will always be items that are unforgettable. These are the kind of items that if you see them–you automatically relate them to the video game they came from. They are usually so unique that they can never be recreated anywhere else. Now let’s look at some of the most unforgettable video game items! 5. First Aid Spray (Resident Evil series) First aid sprays are a well-recognized item of the Resident Evil series. First aid sprays would give the player full health but was unable to cure the effects of poison. Advertisements throughout the series often suggests that the first aid sprays were a product of Umbrella to cure all wounds. A product that would be very beneficial to Umbrella employees with all the dangerous experiments they had to deal with. The first aid spray–although not completely unique–is very well known with the Resident Evil series. 4. Buster Sword (Final Fantasy VII) The trademark weapon of Cloud Strife–the Buster Sword...

Netflix Pick of the Week: Indie Game The Movie

Indie Game: The Movie is a new documentary from Canadian filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanna Pajot. Much like the games the film follows, Indie Game: The Movie began as a wonderful idea but limited resources to bring the dream into reality. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the creators had secured enough funds to create their new documentary that would follow three aspiring indie developing companies from early stages of development up until the launch of their new game. The film is an interesting watch, especially if you’re a gamer, as you get to see what all goes on behind the scenes of some of your favorite downloadable titles from the last few years and see the sacrifices the developers and their families make to create a game that will not only be a success but that will give the creators a sense of satisfaction in creating something very meaningful and personal. Super Meat Boy’s Team Meat (Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes), Fez’s Phil Fish and Braid’s Jonathan ...

Square Enix to Cut Prices on Mobile Games

Most iOS gamers are familiar with Square Enix's games. Final Fantasy III, Tactics, and now more recently, Dimensions, have been great hits on the App Store. What's the problem then? The prices are exorbitantly high. $20 (sometimes $30) for a mobile game is just too high for most gamers. “$20 for something you can play for 30 or 40 hours is still cheaper than what you can get on a handheld,” said Antony Douglas, the General Manager of Mobile for Square-Enix Europe. “[Square Enix Japan] are trying that and seeing how it works, and it works very well in Japan. [But] they’re seeing the feedback, and there will probably be changes in the way that it’s structured.”  While the logic is sound, there are still too many free-to-play games available on the App Store to justify the steep price. Here's hoping the online fan outrage gets some drastic price cuts soon. Would you buy Final Fantasy Dimensions if its $30 price tag was cut by half?

The End of an Era: X-Play and Attack of the Show Cancelled

It's a sad day in gaming news as the cancellation of G4 network's Attack of the Show, and X-Play were reported to end production after December. AotS, with it's 1,700 episodes, was pivotal in gamer culture, and along with X-Play would frequently report live from conventions such as San Diego Comic Con, and E3. “Attack of the Show and X-Play have been important for G4, and we want to acknowledge the creative people who have helped inspire and showcase the phenomenon of gamer culture,” says the GM of G4, Adam Stotsky. But why were the shows cancelled in the first place? G4 is attempting to rebrand itself into being more more “upscale, sophisticated guy tv space,” according to a press release, and will possibly be renamed to “G4Men.” Good luck with that.

5 Things Painkiller Hell & Damnation Did Right

Painkiller Hell & Damnation will release next week for PC. Now let's look at some of the things the latest title did right! 5. Stayed True to the Series They didn't go back and try to re-invent what made the original Painkiller fun, the mindless fast paced shooting. The original game was at home in a Serious Sam style of gameplay and the remake delivers that classic simple shooter that is missing in today’s market 4. Unique Weapons I have to say, it's been a while since the first weapon in a game I was given was a gun that shot saw blades and had an alternate fire to channel a beam to make enemies heads explode 3. Cooperative Gameplay It's a nice little update giving you the option to tackle the legions of hell with your friends. 2. Enemy Variety In this day and age you're lucky if there's 8 enemy types to deal with. Painkiller has over 30 of some of the most creative enemy types I've seen in a while. 10 foot tall skeletons clad in obsidia...

Wii U To Sell For A Loss At Launch

President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata explained that the Wii U will have a negative impact on earnings in the upcoming quarter due to, "rather than determining a price based on its manufacturing cost, we selected one that consumers would consider to be reasonable." He also stated, "In this first half of the term before the launch of the Wii U, we were not able to make a profit on software for the system while we had to book a loss on the hardware, which is currently in production and will be sold below cost." This news comes just after Nintendo announcing they'll begin making a profit on each 3DS system sold, nearly two years after the console's launch. It's worth noting, this isn't the first time Nintendo has launched a home console at a loss. The Gamecube was not profitable at the beginning of its generation either.
